Hi. I was getting ready to buy a 486/DX50 Mhz PC reciently but now I'm
not sure if I should, because a few of the vendors that I talked to
said that the 486/DX50's have been having chip compatability problems.
Has anyone heard of this or had any problems with their 486/DX50 PC.

The K is blacK, because the PHOTO scheme is RGB with B for Blue.

The 'K' indeed stands for blacK. The reason for this seems to be quiet
simple. IMHO they use the 'K' to avoid mixing it up with other colors -
most likely BLUE of the RGB-color-scheme.

Greetings all.
Should comspec and shell in your config.sys and autoexec.bat point to
the same command.com? Do they have to? What will happen if they
don't?
Thanks for helping me figure this out,

Subject: Cyrix 386->486 upgrade
In the March 1993 issue of PC/Computing, mention was made of the Cyrix
CX486DRU2 microprocessor. Supposedly, this is a 486 direct
replaceable upgrade for a 386 processor. (At the moment I have a 20MHz
386DX with co-processor.) A few questions:
- Does anyone out there have any experience with this chip?
- Exactly how "directly replaceable" is it? (Other chips have
required moterboard modifications.)
- Is it a true 486? If not, what functionality is lost?
- How do I know if I can use it in my mother board?
- Is a BIOS upgrade required?
- What are the current street prices for this chip? It was listed in
the article at $399.00, I'm sure that's the retail price.
Thanks in advance

Hi netters,
I have a strange problem while running DBase IV in the
following environment :
MS-DOS V5.01 with HIMEM.SYS loaded,
486 DX 33
HD IDE 245 Mb
RAM 8Mb
The problem(s) is (are):
- When starting DBase IV, the following message appears : "DBase IV is
not configured for the active code page. (Q)uit/(C)ontinue ?" or
something like that...
-When accessing hard disk, the following message appears : "Warning,
found critical error when accessing drive C: (R)etry ?" and the system
felt down ! (The HD has been checked with NDD...)
Do someone know the origin of this(these) problem(s). Is there
a link between both of them ? Perhaps a memory management problem ?
Any help greatly appreciated.

SCSI defines 8 devices, and 2048 units per device. On a SCSI card, one
device is the card itself (the "Host Adapter"). Most disk drives use
logical unit number (LUN) zero. I believe you can get up to 4 SCSI
cards in a system, no more most likely due to lack of IRQs.

Subject: EGA SWITCHES
Hello net:
I have an intersting problem with my VGA black&white monitor:
When I try to run some programs the monitor does not work, usually
this kind of programs are not commercial ones.
I run checkit and obtain: EGA SWITCHES 0010.
When I run other kind of programs (usually commercial software) the
monitor works very well, and after run this programas I can run the
othres ones too !!!! And the monitor works very well !!!!!!
After the monitor works very well I run checkit and obtain: EGA
SWITCHES 0110.
My questions:
1.-What is the diference between 0010 and 0110 in the EGA SWITCHES
value?
2.-What are EGA SWITCHES?
3.-Is there some program (shareware or free) that can change EGA
SWITCHES?
Thank you very much.

IF, I repeat, IF there is NO change to the partition size, then the dos
formatting will be ok. This is because FDISK only modifies track 0,
and defines what cylinders contain what. The FAT and BOOT sector of
the partition tell how big the partition is, and if different than
track 0, problems can occur.
I once had a trashed partition, and I fixed it with a delete/create
cycle. The data was OK.

Subject: gameport: reading two joysticks
I want to read the resistor values of two joysticks attached via an Y
connector to the gameport of a serial card. I tried irq 0x15 function
0x84, dx=0, but only got values for ONE of the sticks, i.e. only the
values of ax and bx changed, cx and dx were always zero. I
additionally tried to locate the resp. ports at 0x200 etc., in order to
find the places where I could get the sticks' values directly, but
found only the button values of the first joystick at locateions
0x200-0x203. What do I have to do in order to get the resistor values
(i.e. the x-y-coordinates) of two joysticks ?

Try 2*4MB. Often memory must be put in by pairs.

Subject: ide drives
Keywords: ide master slave
I have bought an NEC D3756 100 MB IDE drive for a friends computer.
The problem is neither the computer nor the drive have any
documentation. The computer is a PC compatible that is about two years
old and has a Western Digital 95044-A from 8/31/1990. He has a "single"
drive controller but i have a cable for piggy backing. I have been told
that the WD is an IDE but i don't know how to put it into master mode.
Also, I'm not entirely sure of the slave jumper settings on the NEC,
although I have been told that they are either 12 or 13. Would it be
easier to simply buy a new 2 drive IDE controller, or do I still need
similar information. My e-mail is siegal@molbio.ethz.ch. I greatly
appreciate any light that anyone can shed on this murky situation.

Perhaps you need additional excludes. First try X=B000-FFFF and see if
that makes the floppies work. If so, it's just a matter of a binary
search to find the region which needs to be excluded. Likely areas to
try are F000-FFFF and wherever your disk controller ROM is located.

Subject: Connecting two machines without a null modem cable
I have two computers which I would like to connect directly via modem.
One computer has an external 14.4K .42bis modem on COM2 (Digicom
Eagle+), the other has a plain vanilla 2400 baud internal modem, also
on COM2.
The question is: how do I get the two machines to talk (I have MS
Kermit 3.11 and Telix 3.2 on both) if I simply connect the modems on
each machine with a phone wire? (I am connecting the cable to the
"LINE" jack on each modem). I assume there is a sequence of AT commands
I should be sending to each, but as of yet, I haven't been able to get
them to talk.
By the way, yes I have heard of a null modem cable, and I realize that
data transfer using one will be faster, but given the location of the
two machines (they're not far apart, but it is a pain to get access to
the rear connectors), it is much more convenient to connect them this
way.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: TWO VGA monitors.
Its pretty well know that IBM supports two video cards, one mono and
the other color (using different ports 3b8 and 3da to drive them and
different video addresses). However, there seems to be some BIOS
support for having two VGAs, (INT 10, function 12). It seems to work
by first enabling one display and disabling the other, making the
updates to the enabled display and so forth.
However, there seems to be no indication of what machines, if any,
support two VGA cards. For example, can I put two VGA's in my GATEWAY
2000? The answer from GATEWAY's tech support was "hun?"
Any ideas would be appricated. John MErtus

Subject: 486DX 50 Upgrade seems to Cause Spreadsheet Problems
I recently upgraded to a 486 dx 50 mhz motherboard and everything seems
fine except for spreadsheet programs. I have found this same problem
with Lotus 123 v2.3 and v3.1, as well as Quattro Pro v4. The problem
is that intermittently keystrokes get buffered and then come out in
bunches.
For example, I may hit the arrow key once and nothing happens, but if I
hit it again, the cursor moves two cells. The same thing can happen on
menus. /m, calls the menu, but the move prompt does not come up; if I
hit the m again, it is as if I had hit two m's.
Does anyone know why this would occur and what to do about it? I have
removed all tsr's and changed keyboards and this does not seem to have
any effect.
